Debate rages across several disciplines about how to address the issues and even whether we will be able to maintain our biological diversity - even into the next 50 years. Many threats to Australian native wildlife are ongoing and arise from diseases carried by migratory or invasive animals, quarantine and customs breaches, and even new diseases such as the Tasmanian devil facial tumour disease. Other threats are environmental and include introduced predators, loss of habitat due to land clearing and urbanisation, pesticide and chemical residue contamination and the potential effects of climate change. Many of these threats act in concert to produce deleterious change. This symposium will look at current research and recent trends in disease and other threats to native fauna and importantly, the interactions between these factors. The 'Trouble in Paradise' symposium will attract scientists, academics, teachers, students and all those interested in the broad scope of the biological sciences. Everyone with an interest in biology is invited to attend. Speakers include academics who are leaders in fields related to Australian species, river health, disease control and extinction. The meeting will showcase the talents of Australian biologists and be a forum for a non-political exchange of views amongst all those interested in the challenges faced by Australian wildlife. Speakers & Topics include: - Prof Hamish McCallum, Tasmanian devil facial tumour disease, University of Tasmania - Dr Alex Hyatt, Chytrid disease of frogs, Australian Animal Health Laboratories - Mr Ian Penrose, Yarra River Health, Yarra River Keeper - Dr Ann Musser, Challenges facing monotremes, The Australian Museum Registration: Early Bird Registration (by 16 Oct) $77: Non-members Registration Fee $55: AIB Members' Registration Fee $88: Non-members who join AIB on registration Late Bird Registration (after 16 Oct $99: Non-members Registration Fee $77: AIB Members' Registration Fee $105: Non-members who join AIB on registration For registration information go to: http://www.aibiol.org.au or email: conference@aibiol.org.au - the 'Trouble in Paradise' symposium is proudly supported by 'NRMjobs', Australian Academy of Science, Water Technology Pty Ltd, Lloyd Environmental Pty Ltd, Ecowise Environmental Pty Ltd, and Scats About Pty Ltd ======================= Lance Lloyd, B.Sc., M.Sc., MAIBiol.
